Spiritual Development: A Tough Challenge In Today’s World
Spiritual Progress: The Difficult Challenge Of Our Modern World
By TarotMeister
To grow spiritually in a world identified by dominance, money, and influence is a Herculean undertaking. Contemporary conveniences such as electronic equipment, gadgets, and devices as well as distractions through TV, periodicals, and the Internet have inclined us to confine our awareness generally to material requirements and wants. As a result, our concepts of self-worth and self-meaning are muddled. How can we arrive at a sense of balance between the physical and spiritual features of our lives?
To Develop Spiritually Is To seek inward.
Looking inward goes outside summoning up the stuff that transpired in a day, week, or month. You must look inward closely and ruminate on your thoughts, feelings, and stimuli. once in a while looking at your incidents, the choices you render, the connections you enjoy, and the things you engage in offer beneficial insights into your life’s aspirations, on the beneficial traits you need to keep up and the injurioustraits you need to discard. In addition, it offers signs on how to act, react, and behave, when you are amid any circumstances. Akin to any ability, Seeking inwardly can be cultured; all it takes is the courage and readiness to seek out the honesty that lies within you. Here are a few pointers: when you look inside: be objective, be forgiving of your negative qualities, and focus on your areas for progress.
To Grow Spiritually Is To Cultivate Your Capabilities.
Science and religion possess dissimilarpoints of view on the issues of the human life-force. Religion sees people as spiritual organisms briefly living on Earth, while science looks at the soul as just one facet of a personality. Progression of the “self” is a recurring theme in all religious teachings; Christian (Western), Buddhist, and Islamic (Eastern) to name a few.
The wants of the body are accepted but placed below the requirements of the inner self. Beliefs, ideals, morality, sets of laws, experiences, and virtuous works supply the blueprint to ensure the development of the spirit. In psychology, finding ones full potential is to “self-actualize.
Abraham Maslow recognize a number of human needs: among them are – “security, belonging, esteem, self-actualization, and self-transcendance”. William James had earlier classified these requirements into just three: physical, emotional (love, belonging, etc.), and spiritual (things of the soul). As soon as you’ve satisfied the basic material and emotional needs, spiritual or existential needs come next. Reaching each need leads to the overall enhancement of the individual. Maybe the difference between religion and psychology is the end of self-growth: Religions see self-development as a method of serving God, whereas psychology perceives self-improvement as a conclusion in itself.
Growing Spiritually Is To Look For Deeper Meaning.
Religions that believe in the reality of God like Christianism, Judaism, and Islam, believe that the primary aim of our life is to serve the Creator of all things. Quite a few conjectures in psychology suggest that we finally, give meaning to our lives. No matter if we believe that life is self-directed or pre-determined, to increase in spirit is to appreciate that we do not only exist. We do not realize the import of our lives at birth; but we increase realization and wisdom from our communications with associates and from our actions and reactions to the circumstances we are in. As we realize this value, there are certain beliefs and values which we discard and/or affirm.
Our lives do possess purpose. This intentions puts all our bodily, emotional, and intellectual purposes into use; sustains us in the course of difficult times; and gives us something to look forward to—a goal to reach, a destination to accomplish. A person without purpose or meaning can be likened to a wanderingship at sea.
Spiritual Development Is To Comprehend Interconnections.
New Age religions stress the notion of our connection to the One Great Whole, animate and non-living. In this fashion we call others “brothers” and “sisters” even if there are no direct blood relations. Subsequently, deity-centered beliefs such as Christianity and Islam address the association linkinghumans and a greater being. Conversely, science illustrates our relationship to other living things throughout the theory of evolution. This association is plainly seen in the hypothesis of ecology, the interconnection involving living and non-living things. In psychology, association is a characteristic of soul-awareness, the peak human requirement according to Maslow. Recognizing your inter-connectedness to everything makes you more humble and considerate toward all persons, animals, plants, and everything else in our environment. It helpsrecognize the value of everything around one. It moves us to go further than our comfort zone connect withdevelop into stewards of all other things around us.
Spiritual growth is a process, accordingly to mature in spirit is a day-to-day practice. We win some, and we lose some, but the most critical matter is that we gain knowledge, and together with this learning, further spiritual progress is made possible.

Spiritual Development $27.73 Drawing on the global research and field-building efforts of Search Institutes Center for Spiritual Development in Childhood and Adolescence, this volume frames a new, deeper dialogue about the intersections between youth development and spiritual development. Contributors explore ways to integrate spiritual development and youth development in order to strengthen theory, research, and practice. They ask: OL {list-style: disc} P: {margin-left 60px} How do young people develop their deepest, fundamental commitments? How do they find their place in their family, community, world, and universe? How do they come to terms with issues of meaning, purpose, and identity beyond themselves? These are, at their core, spiritual development questions. They are also critical issues in adolescent development. They are the wellspring of some of the best within young people and humanity, and the source of some of the greatest atrocities in society when the answers lead to alienation, hatred, or violence. The past decade has seen an explosion in interest in spiritual development within youth development and related fields. National youth-serving systems are beginning to ask how they can effectively address these questions in a society that has become increasingly diverse and pluralistic. And the growth of positive, community-based youth development provides a platform for examining these issues within the context of an overall commitment to healthy, holistic development among all young people. This volume is a valuable addition to the field. This is the 118th volume of New Directions for Youth Development, the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series dedicated to bringing together everyone concerned with helping young people, including scholars, practitioners, and people from different disciplines and professions. The result is a unique resource presenting thoughtful, multi-faceted approaches to helping our youth develop into responsible, stable, well-rounded citizens. |

Seasons of the Soul: Stages of Spiritual Development $13.6 Every Christian is on an amazing journey. But the unfortunate truth is that many of us live largely detached from this fact. Days go by, but it can be hard to feel a sense of movement or growth. Sometimes, in periods of doubt and depression, we might feel stuck in the same place for months. Yet the truth remains that from the moment we give Christ control of our life, we set out on the most significant journey that exists: the journey of becoming like Jesus. In these pages, spiritual formation professor and New Testament scholar Bruce Demarest helps us grasp the whole picture of the journey we’re on that we might live our days with intention and keep moving toward maturity in faith. Using Scripture, writings from our rich spiritual tradition and stories of present-day believers walking the same path of faith, Demarest leads us through the three main stages of the journey: putting our faith in Christ experiencing struggles and doubts coming to deeper faith In addition, discussion and reflection questions at the end of each chapter help you see where you’ve been and what stage you’re at now. And throughout the book, you will be reminded of the ultimate destination: perfection, wholeness and eternity with Christ. Whether you are struggling and feeling stuck or experiencing a time of great joy, these pages will give you perspective, courage and hope as they guide you on the path of becoming like Jesus. |

The Shadow on the Path: Clearing the Psychological Blocks to Spiritual Development $20.01 Psychology and spiritual healing meet in this important book that explores the nature of the human psychological ’shadow.’ Eminent psychoanalyst Carl Jung first used the term "shadow" to designate the dark side of the human personality: the part of ourselves we try to hide from or deny. Paradoxically, denying our shadows leaves us stuck on our spiritual paths — a condition that V. J. Fedorschak identifies and dresses in this contemporary approach to spiritual psychotherapy. Tracing the development of the shadow from Freud through the present, The Shadow on the Path offers four approaches to help readers understand and face their shadow — and thereby regain clarity and growth in their lives. An indispensable tool for spiritual and psychological growth, and eminently readable, The Shadow on the Path discusses — The "shadow" in the works of Freud, Jung, Reich, Alice Miller and other notable therapists — The principles of inner spiritual development in the major world religions, and how these traditions address the "shadow" — Examples of the disowned "shadow" in contemporary religious movements — Methods of spiritual psychotherapy that can be useful in the healing process — Case studies of clients in spiritual groups who have worked with their shadow issues. The Shadow on the Path is a daring book that offers insight into the ramifications of the denied shadow, from individual suffering to corruption within spiritual groups. — Endorsements by Georg Feuerstein, Joseph Chilton Pearce, Dick Anthony (co-editor, with Ken Wilber, of Spiritual Choices) and John Pierrakos, M.D. |

Spiritual Theology $5.87 Often spirituality today is isolated from church teaching and doctrine, as in Joseph Campbell ’s treatment of myth and the many forms of New Age theologies, but doctrine apart from the life of prayer is abstract and sterile. In Spiritual Theology Allen turns to the great teachers of the past the church fathers, Augustine, Maximus the Confessor, Bonaventure, Hugh of St. Victor, Calvin and Luther, George Herbert to recover a spirituality that is rich with the doctrines and disciplines of theology. Allen covers the great questions of the spiritual life: what is the Christian goal? what leads us toward that goal, and what hinders us? what is conversion? how can we discern our progress in the spiritual life? what are the fruits of the Spirit? A second purpose of the book is to introduce readers to the disciplines and texts of the threefold way, found in the eastern church from the fourth century on. Allen writes simply and clearly of the active life and the development of virtue, and the contemplative life, which includes coming to know God through the Book of Nature and the Book of Scripture as well as directly, face to face, which is the domain of mystical theology. This book is a basic and accessible introduction to the classic writings and doctrines of the spiritual life. |

A Brief History of Everything $16.95 A Brief History of Everything is an altogether friendly and accessible account of men and women’s place in a universe of sex, soul, and spirit, written by an author of whom New York Times reporter Tony Schwartz says: No one has described the path to wisdom better than Ken Wilber. Wilber examines the course of evolution as the unfolding manifestation of Spirit, from matter to life to mind, including the higher stages of spiritual development where Spirit becomes conscious of itself. In each of these domains, there are recurring patterns, and by looking closely at them, we can learn much about the predicament of our world–and the direction we must take if global transformation is to become a reality. Wilber offers a series of striking and original views on many topics of current interest and controversy, including the gender wars, modern liberation movements, multiculturalism, ecology and environmental ethics, and the conflict between this-worldly and otherworldly approaches to spirituality. The result is an extraordinary and exhilarating ride through the Kosmos in the company of one of the great thinkers of our time. |

A Concise History of Buddhism $114.04 Buddhism is a widely diverse religion, with many traditions handed down through the centuries. The newcomer seeking to understand the sometimes contradictory spiritual texts can find it daunting. A Buddhist and professor at Oxford University now unravels these varied religious threads and creates a wonderfully clear and compact look at Buddhist history. From the ancient Indian context to Buddhism in countries beyond, from the Mahayana sutras to Tantra, it presents an account of the religion’s development up through the 19 the century, its doctrines and its schools. But the study also covers the context in which Buddhism developed, the external events that had an impact on the religion. Using the most recent scholarship available, it reflects on the Buddha and his teachings, the paths to awakening, the development in the Sangha, the Tripitaka and the Abhidharma, the end of Buddhism in India, and the practice of Buddhism all throughout Asia. A truly enlightening guide. |

A Psychology of Spiritual Healing $113.62 In this comprehensive new work, Eugene Taylor uses the tenets of modern psychology, concepts from the world’s religions, and a lifetime of spiritual experiences and interior exploration to show how true healing comes from within. Taylor asserts that consciousness and healing are linked and this connection can best be understood within the context of a growth-oriented psychology of self-realization. Everyone has the capacity to develop a healing personality.Drawing from such diverse interpreters of transcendental and psychological experiences as William James, Emanuel Swedenborg, Mircea Eliade, Carl Jung, Victor Frankl, and Abraham Maslow, Taylor explores the divisions between science and religious traditions; presents his own personal experiences, including his meetings with the Dalai Lama and Tenzin Norgay; and provides glimpses into the spiritual lives of others who have shared their experiences with him. The function of belief in the alleviation of suffering, the development of self-awareness, and the importance of human relationships form the basis for Taylor’s psychology of spiritual healing. This cogent work both provides answers and raises questions for the spiritual seeker.Eugene Taylor holds a Ph.D. in the History and Philosophy of Psychology. His works include William James on Exceptional Mental States (1982), Cyberphysiology: The Science of Self-Regulation (1988), and William James on Consciousness beyond the Margin (1996). He is the founder and director of the Cambridge Institute of Psychology and Religion, a lecturer at the Harvard Medical School, and a member of the executive faculty of the Saybrook Institute. |

A Theology of the Corporation: A Franciscan Approach $14.79 At a meeting of the National Work Commission of the Secular Franciscan Order, I suggested the need for a book on a theology of the corporation. Thus began the long road on this project. After fifty years of working in the heavy earth-moving industryabuilding roads, mining, land clearing, agriculture and dam building as operator, mechanic, instructor, supervisor, manager and consultantaI was incorporated and worked for some Fortune 50 corporations, the Agency for International Development and World Bank in the USA, Central and South America and Indonesia. Work and the corporate world are no strangers to me. In the search for a better world, the spiritual life is too often neglected. Teaching operators, mechanics and managers, I also applied the social teachings of the Church. I am satisfied that the corporation has a moral conscience. Hopefully, the book shows how that theological dimension can shine forth. |

According to Luke (S) $17.49 Though Steiner was born with clairvoyant capacities, it was not until his fortieth year that he could link his inner experiences with the principal figure of Western spirituality, Jesus Christ. After that solemn festival of knowledge , as he describes it in his autobiography, Steiner received ceaseless revelations about the significance and detailed course of the Christ’s incarnation. In lecture cycles spanning two decades, he spoke of the hidden background to all four gospels, the Book of Revelations, and even the Fifth Gospel of events that he read directly from the spiritual worlds. This lecture cycle presents the most accessible and illuminating of Steiner’s revelations with regard to Christ, and his significance for humanity’s spiritual development. He discusses the link between Buddha and the life of Christ, a description that unites Buddhism and Christianity, not in theory but in perceived spiritual deeds of these two figures. Here, too, Steiner describes the relationship of the Greek Mystery traditions to the event at Golgotha: A ’sign’ was to be placed before them as well, a sign now to be enacted before the eyes of all mankind. The ‘mystical death’ that had been a ceremonial act in the Mystery Temples for hundreds and thousands of years was now to be presented on the great arena of world-history. Everything that had taken place in the secrecy of the Temples of Initiation was brought into the open as a single event on Golgotha .Utilizing a historical overview, revealing the relationship between the great religious traditions, and how they have conspired together for the good of humanity, Steiner never loses sight of the Gospel’s great inner meaning, as echoed in theGospel of St. Luke: The revelation of the spiritual worlds from the Heights and its answering reflection from the hearts of men brings peace to all whose purpose upon the evolving Earth is to unfold good will . |
